Fighting “Fair”

All relationships involve some conflict at times. It’s important to be able to disagree, air concerns, and come to resolutions (or “fight fair”) when important issues come up.

Consider agreeing to ground rules. For example, healthy ground rules can include no hitting anyone or anything, no name-calling and no swearing. Period. If you or your partner can’t agree on ground rules, that’s a red flag.

Keep in mind that conflict is an opportunity for growth, so the goal is never to avoid all conflict. If you try to avoid conflict by staying silent or giving in, it generally leads to a bigger blowup later on. Be aware if your partner is doing this and encourage them to tell you what’s on their mind.
